History of card game Rummy   by Adam Avis

Rummy, the most accepted family of card games that are being played globally. People of different ages and class equally prefer to play Rummy, as this unique family shares the “draw and discard” structure. And apart from this exclusive playing pattern, this card game further confirms that one should get rid of all of the cards that they are having in their hands with the options to form either sets or runs. It is also known to be the third most popular game in the World according some reliable source.

We must now concentrate on the origin of Rummy, as without knowing Rummy history we rather cannot develop any basic and concrete idea about this most popular family of card games. Originated centuries back, this Rummy family further observes various opinions and theories relating to its origin

It is rather confusing to trace the origin of Rummy. As, the Rummy history confirms that beyond 1800 there exists no such theory that confirms the origin of this card game. The only thing we can do is to concentrate on some, said to be the authentic theories, which confirms the origin of this popular card game. The first one is the “Poker Theory.” According to this theory Rummy has been evolved from the card game, “Poker”. As, both the card games observe some basic similarities; in both the games the cards are usually combined in same manner and further both shares the same concepts of sequences and groups. It is also said that Rummy was basically developed from a game called “Whiskey Poker” which later converted as “Rum Poker”, and gradually just “Rum” and ultimately the “Rummy”.

The other relevant theory is the “Chinese Theory.” This theory confirms that Rummy observes an East Asian origin, and further confirms similarities with ‘The Chinese Mahjong Game’. The Rummy history also indicates that ‘The Chinese Mahjong Game’ follows the same constituent of drawing and discarding cards along with many additional Chinese card games of the 18th century.

And finally, the “Spanish, or Conquian, Theory.” This theory indicates that “The Rummy games” have been originated from the Spanish game “Conquian”, introduced by the Spanish communities while immigrating west. Rummy history further confirms that this game is the ancestor of all Rummy games, and shows its similerity with the most accepted modern game of Gin Rummy.

Gin Rummy further can be designated as the most accepted variant of the Rummy games that have been invented in New York during the first decade of the 20th century.

According to the various reliable sources it isconfirmed that the name Gin Rummy have actually derived from its inventor’s acute likings of alcoholic(Gin) drink. According to the Rummy history this game gained massive popularity during 1930s and 1940s, as it was adopted by Hollywood’s elite and famous movie stars. An another, and the most accepted reason of such popularity was the great depression period, when people actually are lacking of financial resources, and they are having no alternative rather than accepting the indoor entertaining options. Some other variations of this card game also appeared during the same time, such as ‘Contract Rummy’.

The Rummy history further is not able to produce any definite answer to the question of origin. As there exists difference of opinion and thus it hard to trace the actual one, and further all the theories are based on real facts and cannot be ignored.

It has been observed that online Rummy is gaining much popularity and further offering players the chance to play different rummy variants online. This increasing popularity of Rummy also confirms that it will continue further and the generations to follow will witness the reality.
